What to Do in the Event of a Hit & Run Accident

Posted by Ted Knight  on October 26, 2022

There's no denying the fact that accidents will happen. And while most people are responsible adults who will exchange information and make sure everyone is ok afterward, hit-and-run accidents happen every year. While no accident is looked forward to, we'll be going over the basic information of what to do if you find yourself on the receiving end of one.

What is a Hit & Run Accident?

Many states have very strict laws about what to do after an accident. These can include but are not limited to exchanging insurance and driver information and reporting any fatalities, injuries, and damages to property, no matter how minor they might be. When someone is at fault for an accident and immediately flees the scene, this constitutes a hit-and-run accident.

What to Do

If you're involved in a hit-and-run accident, there are a number of tasks you must undertake immediately to ensure safety for you, your passengers, and your property.

Get Everyone to Safety

The most important step also happens to be the very first one. If you can, move your vehicle out of traffic and make sure you and your passengers aren't hurt. A person's life is always more important than physical property.

Notify the Authorities Immediately

Once safety has been established, and everyone is secure, the police must be notified as soon as possible. The faster the police are notified, the better the chances are that the assailant is apprehended. You'll also need to file an accident report that will be submitted to your insurance company.

Write Down the Details

Once you've notified the authorities, take a few minutes and think about the details of what occurred. Anything that you remember about the assailant's car will be crucial in them being held accountable for their actions.

Notify Your Insurance Company

If there’s any physical damage or bodily injuries as a result of a hit-and-run accident, insurance claims need to be filed as soon as possible. Once the accident has been reported to the proper authorities, your company needs to be notified right away.
