The Safest Places to Wait for Roadside Assistance

No driver plans to get stranded on the side of the road, and it can be extremely stressful and frightening when it does happen.  Whether your car has broken down or there was an accident, sometimes you need a tow truck.  Waiting for them to arrive can be dangerous, especially if you’re on a busy road or highway.  Knight’s Towing has put together a quick guide to help keep you as safe as possible while waiting for a tow truck to arrive.

One of the safest places to wait is on the right shoulder of the road.  Avoid blocking the road at all costs, as this can result in more crashes and poses a danger to you and the other drivers on the road.  If you’re still able to steer and accelerate, get yourself safely to the designated shoulder and contact roadside assistance.  If you cannot safely move your car by driving it, leave it where it is.

If possible, wait inside your car.  You should not do this if the car is smoking or overheated, but inside the car is one of the safest places you can wait.  Your car is far more visible than you are, so waiting inside greatly reduces the chances of you getting struck by an oncoming vehicle that hasn’t spotted you.  Keep yourself cool and run the AC if possible.

The most important thing to keep in mind is getting yourself away from traffic.  If it is safe to exit your vehicle, do so on the side of the car that isn’t in traffic.  This may require you to scoot across your seats and exit from the passenger side.  Very slowly open your door and check both ways before exiting and walking towards the road.  Put your hazards on and make yourself as visible as possible.  If you keep a fluorescent vest or jacket in your car, put that on immediately.  Light any flares you have on hand as well, especially if you broke down in the evening or at night.
